South Africa's health system is under strain. Public clinics are stretched thin and private health care is priced out of reach for many. Medicus is built to sit in the middle: thorough, unhurried consultations with a registered GP, at a price that's honest and a format that fits around your day.

You choose a time. You see Dr James via video consultation for a full twenty minutes. You walk away with what a comprehensive GP visit would provide: a prescription, a sick note, a referral to a specialist, or simply a plan.

Is Medicus for you?

Online consultations can be used for a variety of conditions: colds and flu, skin conditions, a bad cough, an upset stomach, UTIs, chronic disease management, mental health issues, script refills, sick notes and ultimately an expert opinion for your medical concerns.

Medicus is not the place to turn to if you're experiencing chest pain, difficulty breathing, bleeding, loss of consciousness, seizures, head injuries or severe injuries such as car accidents. If this sounds like what you're experiencing, please visit your nearest emergency room.

“My goal at every consultation is simple: to make sure you feel seen and heard.”

After working in emergency rooms in multiple provinces across South Africa, it became clear to me that healthcare is not equally accessible to all throughout our country. Medicus is my attempt to change that: a thorough twenty-minute consultation, from the comfort of your home, at a time you choose, on your terms.

I'm an HPCSA-registered doctor and practise in accordance with South African telemedicine guidelines. My goal at every consultation is simple: to make sure you feel seen and heard. Your health, on your terms.

After focusing my career on emergency medicine, I found that on too many occasions I was seeing gravely ill patients, who were suffering from conditions that could've been treated simply, at home, if they'd had access to healthcare sooner. As a result, my passion has shifted to primary care, with an emphasis on preventative medicine.

Questions

Things people ask.

Who is Medicus for?+

Anyone in South Africa who wants to see a general practitioner from home, on their own schedule, without queuing at a clinic or paying a premium for medical-aid-billed care. Patients book Medicus for everyday illness, repeat prescriptions for stable conditions, sick notes, referrals, travel advice, and general medical questions.

What can Dr James help with?+

Common acute issues (cold, flu, throat, ear, urinary, skin), repeat prescriptions for stable chronic conditions, sick notes for work or study, referrals to specialists or for investigations, contraception and women's health, men's health, mental health check-ins, travel advice, and general medical questions. If a condition needs hands-on examination or urgent in-person care, Dr James will tell you and refer you appropriately.

How quickly can I see a doctor?+

Same-week appointments are usually available. Open the booking page to see live slots; pick a time that suits you and pay R300 to confirm. Your confirmation and secure video link are emailed immediately.

Do I need to download anything?+

No. The consultation runs in your web browser on any device, phone, tablet, or computer. Click the link in your confirmation email at your appointment time and the video call opens directly in the browser.

Can Dr James prescribe medication?+

Yes, where clinically appropriate. An electronic prescription is issued through EMGuidance and emailed to you after the consultation. You can take it to any pharmacy in South Africa to be dispensed.

Can I get a sick note?+

Yes, where warranted. The sick note is issued in line with HPCSA guidance and emailed to you shortly after your consultation. Most South African employers accept it without question.

Is this for emergencies?+

No. Medicus is not for medical emergencies. If you feel your symptoms warrant urgent care, call 10177 for an ambulance or visit your nearest emergency room.

Do I need medical aid?+

No. Medicus is a direct-pay service at R300 per consultation, paid up-front. No medical aid required, which keeps care accessible whether you have a scheme or not. You can claim the consultation back from your medical aid savings account in many cases; we email you a receipt.

What payment methods do you accept?+

Credit card, debit card, instant EFT, and SnapScan, all via PayFast, South Africa's trusted payment gateway. Your card details never touch Medicus servers.

Is telehealth legal in South Africa?+

Yes. The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) publishes guidelines that permit registered practitioners to conduct telemedicine consultations. Dr James is HPCSA-registered (MP1006886) and practises in accordance with those guidelines.
