Continuity
Renewals, even if you were prescribed elsewhere.
You do not need to have started your medication with Medicus. If your chronic script was first issued by another doctor, it can be renewed here provided the doctor agrees with the indication and is familiar with the medication. Bring your current script, the medication boxes, or a recent pharmacy printout to the consultation and she will take it from there.
Where she is not comfortable renewing, because the condition looks unstable, the medicine needs monitoring she cannot do remotely, or it falls outside her scope, she will say so and refer you to the right care rather than rubber-stamp a repeat. A renewal is a clinical decision every time.
For most stable chronic conditions, that decision is straightforward, and the whole renewal takes one unhurried video call.

A proper chronic check-in.
The doctor reviews how the condition is behaving, checks for side effects and interactions, and confirms the treatment still fits.

Repeats where appropriate.
Where renewal is clinically appropriate, your e-script is issued via EMGuidance with repeats indicated, and emailed to you or your pharmacy.
The six-month rhythm
The six-month chronic review.
Chronic prescriptions in South Africa can carry repeats for up to six months, after which a clinical review is needed before the next script. That six-month check-in is not red tape: it is where doses get adjusted, side effects get caught, and quiet complications get noticed early.

Some renewals need an in-person visit first.
If your condition looks poorly controlled, the medicine needs a physical examination or blood tests before it can safely continue, or the doctor is not familiar with the medication, she will refer you for in-person care or the appropriate tests instead of renewing remotely. Your safety outranks convenience.

What counts as a stable chronic condition?+
One that is well controlled on your current treatment: things like hypertension, type 2 diabetes, asthma, thyroid conditions, or cholesterol, where readings are steady, side effects are settled, and nothing new has emerged. If your condition has been changing, the consultation becomes an assessment first and a renewal second.
Can you renew a script another doctor first prescribed?+
Often, yes. The doctor will renew medication first prescribed elsewhere when she agrees with the indication and is familiar with the medicine. Bring your current script or packaging to the call. Where she is not comfortable, she will refer you rather than guess.
How often do I need a review?+
Typically every six months. South African prescriptions can carry repeats for up to six months, so one video review roughly twice a year keeps a stable condition legally and clinically covered. The doctor may want to see you sooner if something needs watching.
What should I have ready for the consultation?+
Your current script or the medication boxes, any recent test results you have, and home readings if you track them (blood pressure or glucose, for example). The more the doctor can see, the smoother the renewal.
Will my medication be changed?+
Not without discussing it with you. If the doctor thinks a dose adjustment or a switch would serve you better, she will explain why and agree the plan with you. If everything is working, the point of the review is simply to confirm that and reissue.
What if I need blood tests before renewal?+
Some medicines need periodic monitoring. Where that applies, the doctor can issue a referral for the tests where appropriate, and renew once the results are in. It is the same standard a careful in-person GP would hold.
