The difference
Properly signed e-scripts, including schedule 5 and 6.
An electronic prescription is only as strong as the signature it carries. Medicus issues e-scripts through EMGuidance, the platform South African doctors use for prescribing, signed with an advanced electronic signature that pharmacies recognise and the law accepts.
That signature matters: it means schedule 5 and schedule 6 medicines can be prescribed where clinically appropriate, not just the basics. Chronic medication, certain pain relief, and mental health prescriptions can all be considered properly, with the same clinical judgement an in-person GP would apply.
Your script is emailed to you to take to any pharmacy in South Africa, or sent directly to the pharmacy you nominate, whichever is easier for you.

Scope
What your doctor can prescribe.
Prescribing is always a clinical decision made during the consultation. Where appropriate, that can include:
Acute medication
Antibiotics, treatment for infections, allergies, skin conditions and other everyday illness, where indicated.
Chronic medication
Renewals and adjustments for stable chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma and thyroid conditions.
Contraception and women's health
Oral contraceptives and related prescriptions, with the appropriate checks.
Mental health prescriptions
Including schedule 5 medicines such as certain antidepressants and anxiolytics, where clinically appropriate and safely monitored.
Higher-schedule medicines
Schedule 5 and 6 prescribing is possible thanks to the advanced electronic signature, always subject to the doctor's clinical judgement and the law.
Some prescriptions need more than a video call.
Medicines that require a physical examination, laboratory monitoring, or specialist oversight may not be safe to prescribe online, and habit-forming medicines call for particular caution. Where that is the case, the doctor will say so plainly and refer you to in-person or specialist care instead of prescribing.

Frequently asked questions.
How does my prescription arrive?+
As an EMGuidance Script email shortly after your consultation. It carries the doctor's advanced electronic signature, so it is a legally recognised prescription in its own right. You can forward it, print it, or show it on your phone at the pharmacy.
Can the script go straight to my pharmacy?+
Yes. Tell the doctor which pharmacy you use and the script can be sent directly to them, so your medication is ready for collection. Any pharmacy in South Africa can dispense it.
Can schedule 5 or 6 medicines really be prescribed online?+
Where clinically appropriate, yes. Because Medicus scripts are issued through EMGuidance with an advanced electronic signature, they meet the legal requirements for higher-schedule prescriptions. The clinical bar is unchanged: the doctor prescribes only what she would in a consulting room.
What about habit-forming or controlled medication?+
These are treated with particular caution. The doctor may decline to prescribe on a first consultation, ask for records from your previous prescriber, or refer you for in-person assessment. That protects you, and it is what responsible prescribing looks like.
How long is my prescription valid?+
Most prescriptions should be dispensed within 30 days of issue, and can carry repeats for up to six months where the doctor indicates them. Schedule 6 prescriptions cannot be repeated. Your pharmacist confirms validity when dispensing.
Is the medicine itself included in the R300?+
No. The R300 covers the consultation and the prescription where clinically appropriate. You pay the pharmacy for the medication itself, and can shop around since the script is dispensable anywhere in South Africa.
What if the doctor decides medication is not appropriate?+
Then she will tell you why and advise on alternatives, self-care, or referral. Every consultation is a genuine clinical assessment; prescriptions follow from clinical need, never automatically from payment.
